If you want to try some fishing, you're in luck, as the River Arra meanders though the town.

Newcastle West Golf Club
Newcastle West Golf Club is beautifully situated Irish parkland golf course, set amidst mature woodland in the gently rolling landscape of County Limerick in Southern Ireland . Just over an hour's drive from Shannon Airport , the golf course is conveniently positioned for a perfect Irish golfing holiday or short golf break between the famous golf links of Ballybunion and Tralee and the Irish Open venue of Adare Golf Club. Founded in 1938, Newcastle West Golf Club is one of the oldest in the Shannon and mid-west region of Ireland.

Adare Golf Club
The Adare Golf Club is an 18 hole championship golf course which opened in 1995 and is set on the 840 acre estate of Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort in Co. Limerick, Ireland. This was the last major golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Senior. This majestic design has gained international acclaim as one of his finest creations.

Situated only 20 minute drive from Courtenay Lodge Hotel, the Adare Golf Club measures 7,453 yards and uses 230 acres of lush Irish countryside. The exquisite parkland atmosphere of the demesne has been preserved with the course set amid magnificent mature trees. The course contains many aquatic features including a 14 acre lake anchoring the front nine holes. The River Maigue meanders through the entire golf course creating a sense of beauty and challenge.

Also nearby is  Desmond Hall, one of Ireland surviving spacious medieval halls. The Desmond Banqueting Hall is an imposing two-storey structure and was used by the Earls of Desmond for banqueting and entertainment. The Hall, vaulted lower chamber and adjoining tower were all constructed during the 15th century (the hall and chamber were built on the remains of a 13th century structure of similar size). Its restored medieval features include and oak musicians' gallery and a limestone hooded fireplace.

If you want to explore a little further you can continue on the N21 to Killarney and check out the Killarney National Park and the rest of the Ring of Kerry. If you've just done Kerry, then you can head up to Limerick and to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park.
